Blocked toilet: what you can safely try first

Last reviewed 2 October 2026 by the Swansea Plumbing Quotes team

The short answer

Stop flushing: each flush risks an overflow. Use a proper toilet plunger (the type with a flange) and plunge firmly for 15 to 20 seconds, keeping a seal. If that does not work, wait 20 minutes and try again. Avoid mixing drain chemicals, which can react dangerously. If other sinks or the shower also gurgle or back up, the blockage is probably further down the drain, and you may need a drainage specialist or Welsh Water’s sewerage line (0800 085 3968) if the public sewer is affected.

Step by step

  1. Stop flushing and put on rubber gloves.
  2. Lay old towels around the base of the toilet.
  3. Use a flanged toilet plunger and work it firmly up and down for about 20 seconds.
  4. If the water level drops, flush once to test it.
  5. Check whether other drains in the house are slow or gurgling too.

One toilet or the whole drain?

One blocked toilet is usually a local blockage. If the downstairs toilet, sinks and shower all back up, or an outside drain cover is overflowing, the problem is in the drain and needs different equipment.

Who pays

Pipes inside your boundary that serve only your home are usually your responsibility. Shared drains and public sewers are normally Welsh Water’s responsibility in Swansea. Check before booking.

When to get help

If plunging fails, or sewage is coming back up, request quotes and say which fittings are affected.
